$5 Million Private Donation Towards BeltLine Westside Trail

The $43 million Westside BeltLine Trail project is one step closer to its private funding goal thanks to the generous commitment of a $5 million donation from the philanthropic James M. Cox Foundation. The Atlanta BeltLine’s fundraising arm, the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, has a goal of receiving commitments of $10 million in private funds by July 2014. It is in large counting on donations from Atlanta’s business community, and as such the James M. Cox Foundation is setting the precedent for other philanthropic groups.

To learn more about this story read the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s article “Business leaders launch new $10 million fundraising campaign for Beltline.”

The Atlanta BeltLine is turning in its trail application to the Georgia Department of Transportation in June 2014, in July 2014 a contractor will be selected, and construction of the trail is scheduled to start around September 2014 with a completion timeframe, set by the federal government, of 2016. The Westview portion of the trail marks the middle of the path, with one end of the trail being marked by Washington Park and the other end of the trail being marked by Adair Park.

Westside BeltLine Trail Land Acquisition

Last week Creative Loafing wrote an article about Invest Atlanta, the City of Atlanta’s economic development arm, voting to purchase the Westside Trail land from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) for $1.64 million. The Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail comprises of former railroad land that goes from Washington Park to Adair Park (including Westview!). The board’s vote to acquire the land puts the $43 million Atlanta BeltLine trail project one step closer to starting construction in the fall of 2014.

The Westside Trail is not to be confused with the existing West End/Westview spur trail going from the Westview Cemetery to Rose Circle Park, which was a project spearheaded in cooperation with the PATH Foundation. The new Westside Trail will be located inside the former train corridor and will include construction of a flat cemented path, lighting and surveillance cameras for security, benches for resting, and landscaping.

Exciting big development for Westview in 2014!

Westside Trail Design Open House

Westside Trail Design Open House Photos

On February 20, 2014 the Atlanta BeltLine hosted an open house for residents to view the architectural plans of the Westside Trail. The Westside Trail will span from Lena Street in the Washington Park neighborhood, through the Westview neighborhood, to Allene Avenue in the Adair Park neighborhood. The plans outlined locations of retaining walls, access ramps from the streets and neighborhood to the trails, and locations of proposed future transit stops. Construction for the trails are intended to start around September 2014 and will include preparations for the future transit portion, which is also set as part of the Phase I of future development.

Hadley Breckenridge Westview BeltLine Art

Westview BeltLine Art Featured on GSU Website

Georgia State University did a feature on their website about “Georgia State Artists Display Work Across Atlanta.” Hadley Breckenridge, an alumna of GSU, is one of the former students featured by the university for her artwork. Hadley participated in the Art on the BeltLine project three years in a row, all three of which can be found along Westview’s portion of the Atlanta BeltLine!

In 2011 her first piece, titled Enterchange, was painted along a retaining wall along Muse Street facing the Atlanta BeltLine. In 2012 she painted The Highball Artist on the Lucile Avenue bridge. In 2013 she revisited Enterchange by enlarging it to the remaining span of the retaining wall, as well as on the Muse Street facing wall.

Atlanta BeltLineTiger V Grant Meeting

Atlanta BeltLine Tiger V Grant Meeting

On October 3, 2013 the Atlanta BeltLine hosted a citywide conversation at Booker T. Washington High School about the recently awarded Tiger V grant. Thanks to the $18 million grant Westview residents should see construction towards the end of 2014. The $18 million grant will make up only a portion of the $43 million total project cost.

“Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. was awarded TIGER V funding for 2.5 miles of shared use trails, trailheads and access points, and preservation of future streetcar transit corridor in southwest Atlanta. Southwest Trail

Tiger V Grant to Construct Southwest Trail

The Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail in northeast Atlanta has already proven to be a great success since its opening in October 2012. The trail is very actively used by walkers, joggers, and bikers; connects various parks and amenities sought by city dwellers; and is reported to already have spawned some $775 million in private development within a half mile radius over the last several years.

Now the southwest has an opportunity for positive development thanks in part to an $18 million TIGER V grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Southwest Trail will run from Allene Street in Adair Park up to Washington Park. Like the Eastside Trail it will run within the BeltLine corridor and will feature additional security thanks to security cameras and lighting. The total projected cost for purchasing the right-of-way, design, demolition and construction is estimated at $43 million. Thanks to the TIGER V grant the project will be able to proceed ahead of schedule, with earth possibly moving as early as fall 2014.
