WCO Giving for the Holidays

The Westview Community Organization is sponsoring two holiday-related events in the next few weeks:

What: Volunteer Day at Hosea Feed the Hungry
When: Saturday, November 13th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm
Location: Hosea Feed the Hungry, 1035 Donnelly Ave, Atlanta, GA 30310
Details: We are asking friends and neighbors to help make this a successful day. Hosea Feed the Hungry needs the following:

Clothing and shoes in good condition – all sizes, male and female
Personal hygience items
Non-perishable food
Toys
Check donations made out to Hosea Feed the Hungry
Cash donations can be given directly to Hosea Feed the Hungry during that time

What: Senior Thanksgiving Dinner
When: Thursday, November 18th
Location: Veranda at Atrium Senior Center
Details: The Westview Community Organization has sponsored green beans for the senior dinner at the Verdana at Atrium (formerly John O. Chiles) for a number of years. The organization has volunteered to sponsor green beans again this year. Please inform Scott Smith at scottsingsbari@aol.com or 404.752.6423 if you are willing to donate a large can of beans.

Westview Centennial Celebration

What:
The Westview neighborhood is excited to be celebrating its centennial!

100 years ago William J. Davis purchased the Westwood Park property from the Ontario Land Company for $100,000. He renamed the property “West End Park”, and hired Solon Zachery Ruff, the civil engineer and landscape expert responsible for Ansley Park, to lay out the plans for his new residence park neighborhood. The lots were auctioned off, and neighbors built beautiful Craftsman bungalows along the wide streets.

Today Westview is a vibrant (and still affordable) in-town neighborhood only five minutes from downtown and seven minutes from Midtown! Come spend a day with us and get to know one of Atlanta’s last hidden gems.

The Atlanta BeltLine is sponsoring a free 5K run/walk in conjunction with the grand opening of phase two of the Westview/West End Trail. Immediately following the 5k will be a neighborhood celebration, featuring a grill-off, music, games, and an artist market!

Things to Bring:
Picnic blankets, camping chairs, an appetite, $5 for the grill-off, sunscreen, cold water, smiles.

Community Garden

Property owner Mr. Mitchell has graciously provided an empty plot of land near the intersection of South Gordon Street and Ralph David Abernathy Blvd to the Westview Community Organization for use as a community garden. A group of neighbors tilled the land and set up plots in preparation for their garden. People interested in participating in the WCO community garden should email

Operation Neighborhood Take Back

At a mere 38°F Westview neighbors braved the weather to do door-to-door canvassing for “Operation Neighborhood Take Back” on Saturday, December 5th. The event was sponsored by the Zone 4 Community Prosecutor in conjunction with Zone 4 Police and neighborhoods to provide public safety information to residents.

Community Sponsored Dinner

November 24, 2009

It has become a tradition for the Westview Community Organization, surrounding neighborhood organizations, and NPU-T to sponsor a Thanksgiving Dinner for the seniors at the John O’Chiles senior homes over the years. The homes closed for renovation and have now re-opened as the Atrium-Veranda. The communities have once again come together to provide over 200 seniors with a meal the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Children from the Spelman College Nursery came by to sing to the seniors.

November 7th Clean-Up

Hi friends and neighbors,

We are fast approaching our fall clean-up in Westview. This clean-up has become a full scale community effort with Westview Community Organization, WEND Beautification Committee, West End Coalition, and KIPP STRIVE Academy all working to organize this event! Thank you to everyone who has helped thus far. So with so many individuals from outside our neighborhood helping to clean-up our streets, we have to be sure to show up Saturday to help out!

Here is how and when to help:

When: November 7, 9:00am – 12:00pm
Where: KIPP STRIVE Academy, 1444 Lucile Avenue

How to Help:

Donate bottles of water for lunch afterwards – really needed!
Volunteer to cut a lawn of a vacant house – really needed!
Drive a pick-up truck (for heavy trash) – really needed!
Bring rakes, dust pans, and leaf bags – really needed!
Tell your neighbors (print flyer)
Bring heavy duty gloves
Bring clippers to trim lawns of vacant houses
Donate trash bags and/or gloves
Help setup lunch at the school; no clean-up required :-)

Fall Clean-Up/Beautification

The weather is turning cold, the leaves are changing colors, and it is time for Westview’s next neighborhood event!

On November 7, we will be having the first of four neighborhood clean-up and beautification days. I am so excited to announce that we will be hosting this clean-up in conjunction with KIPP STRIVE Academy, the new charter school located in the J.C. Harris building on Lucile Ave. This will be KIPP STRIVE’s first Saturday community service day with approximately 95 students and 20 adults participating! After the clean-up, we will be having a lunch for all participants.

As in the past, we need neighbors to come together to make this day a success. There are a variety of ways you can help. Please check out our “How You Can Help” list below, and contact me by next Monday (October 19th) to let me know your interest.

How You Can Help

1) Street Captains – We are focusing on quadrant 1 of westview which includes all streets below. We need at least one volunteer from each street to make a list of all work you would like to happen on the day of the clean-up. For example, your street may have a vacant house whose lawn needs to be trimmed, or a dumping area where tires need to be picked up. You will be responsible for collecting that information, and helping to get neighbors on your street to participate in the clean-up. Thanks for those neighbors who have already volunteered!

2) Phone Tree – Many of our neighboors are not on email. We need 2-3 neighboors who can be responsible for calling these neighboors so they may stay informed of this event.

3) Volunteers – Since KIPP STRIVE will be providing ~ 120 volunteers, we need to have as many neighbors helping as possible! We need persons who can haul heavy trash in pick-ups, volunteer to mow lawns of vacant homes, and of course, people to pick up trash. We also need people who can help setup and serve food at the lunch.
