The past week proved well for economic development in the Westview area – on March 31st Marshalls opened up in the Kroger CitiCenter shopping complex, and Deal$ filled a vacant space at the corner of Cascade Avenue and Westwood Avenue with a grand opening of April 1st.

Westview is currently undergoing its master planning process. Residents are encouraged to download the draft master plan and provide feedback by no later than Monday, March 28th, 2011 to info@westviewatlanta.com. The final draft will be voted on at the Westview Community Organization meeting on Monday, April 4, 2011.

Members of the Westview neighborhood joined together with residents from Neighborhood Planning Unit’s T, S, and V for the “Intown South” workshop of the City of Atlanta’s 2011 Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP). Georgia law requires a plan to be made every 3-5 years, and looks at the development of the city for the next 20 years.
In this first meeting (out of 3 meetings total) the goal was to come up with issues and opportunities in our neighborhoods, and the city as a whole.

Although the Atlanta January “blizzard” initially got in the way of the scheduled Trees Atlanta planting on Rogers Avenue, the rescheduled event finally took place on January 22nd. Volunteers both from inside and outside of the neighborhood came to plant trees along the landscape strips and front yards.

Westview Community Organization update from President Scott Smith:
Good day neighbors and extended members of the Westview Community.
In looking at the weather forecast, we have made the decision to cancel the January meeting. While right now the ground is dry, we are concerned with the long term forecast which expects freezing rain tomorrow afternoon and evening. Rather than have you risk your personal safety coming to the meeting, we are canceling the meeting.
The next WCO meeting will be on Monday, February 7th at 7pm. The January meeting of NPU-T will be on Wednesday, January 12th at 7pm. This is the last meeting being held at the Boys & Girls Club.
In the mean time, we do want to make sure you are aware of some upcoming events:

The Westview Community Organization celebrated its annual Holiday Party at Fire Station 17 along with the firefighters. The annual tradition includes the WCO sponsoring a turkey and a ham, and neighbors and friends bringing side dishes, beverages, and desserts. It provides a great opportunity for neighbors and firefighters to mingle in a non-emergency and non-meeting environment.

On Saturday, June 26th, the Westview neighborhood celebrated its 100th birthday. The Westview Centennial Celebration took place at KIPP STRIVE Academy, the new charter middle school next to the BeltLine.
The day’s activities started with a 5K sponsored by the BeltLine, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the Westview portion of the BeltLine Model Mile.
The celebrations continued with music by RnB band In The Pocket, house music by DJs Ryze, Drew, and Ramon Rawsoul, puppet shows and storytelling for young and old, vendors selling organic soaps, prints and more, and some friendly rivalry between the grill-off contestants over who would win the public’s heart for their chicken and rib recipes.

The Westview neighborhood is excited to be celebrating its centennial!
100 years ago William J. Davis purchased the Westwood Park property from the Ontario Land Company for $100,000. He renamed the property “West End Park”, and hired Solon Zachery Ruff, the civil engineer and landscape expert responsible for Ansley Park, to lay out the plans for his new residence park neighborhood. The lots were auctioned off, and neighbors built beautiful Craftsman bungalows along the wide streets.
Today Westview is a vibrant (and still affordable) in-town neighborhood only five minutes from downtown and seven minutes from Midtown! Come spend a day with us and get to know one of Atlanta’s last hidden gems.
The Atlanta BeltLine is sponsoring a free 5K run/walk in conjunction with the grand opening of phase two of the Westview/West End Trail. Immediately following the 5k will be a neighborhood celebration, featuring a grill-off, music, games, and an artist market!
Things to Bring:
Picnic blankets, camping chairs, an appetite, $5 for the grill-off, sunscreen, cold water, smiles.

The City of Atlanta’s pilot recycling program has been expanded! Neighbors on the northern end of the neighborhood (Inman Street, Altoona Place, etc) have already enjoyed the big blue recycling bins for a little while now. But as of April a few more streets have been added to the ReCART program. ReCART encourages recycling by giving points for the amount of items you recycle. The more you recycle the more points you receive. Eventually when enough points are collected participating companies give out free goodies – ranging from money off restaurants to free cans of cat food.

A group of Westview neighbors joined forces with Councilmember Cleta Winslow to clean up illegally dumped tires within the neighborhoods. Winslow sponsored a “tire amnesty” day to enable communities who have fallen victims to illegal tire dumpings to bring the tires to a designated location free of charge.
