Fall Clean-Up

On November 6, we will once again partner with KIPP STRIVE Academy to pick up debris around our neighborhood. We will have over 100 students and parents of KIPP coming out to clean-up our neighborhood, we definitley want to have as many neighbors as possible to join them.

Lunch will be provided, courtesy of the staff of KIPP. We will focus on the streets listed below. Last year we saw that focusing on a few streets had a dramatic impact in one area. In the spring we will host a clean-up for another section of Westview.

Special Request – Neighbors to Support a Local Classroom
Coordinator: Ayana Gabriel
The Westview Community Organization has adopted a local classroom, Ms. Hunter’s 6th grade class, at KIPP STRIVE Academy. This is a perfect opportunity to spend time with children in the neighborhood. We are looking for neighbors who can spend as little as 30 minutes speaking to the class about how you use reading in your everyday life. We also need neighbors who are willing to help organize classroom books. This is a GREAT activity for retired neighbors, so if you know any please mention it to them!

Special Request – Help Paint Elderly Neighbor’s Homes
Coordinator: Ayana Gabriel
The local non-profit, House Proud, spends time fixing up the homes of elderly neighbors in need. Our local representative, Jonathan Kidwell, has asked if there are any neighbors who can help paint on higher parts of a local neighbor’s home. “Higher parts” are areas that require a person to be comfortable with a 24′ ladder. So if you aren’t scared of heights and have some time, let us know!

2010 National Night Out

National Night Out

The Westview Community Organization participated in the annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 3rd. The Public Safety Committee organized neighbors to get together for this public safety event on the lawn at Magnificent Daycare on Westwood Avenue. WCO members donated food and drinks to be enjoyed, and school supplies to be handed out to children for the upcoming school year.

Canine Care

In an effort to protect our four legged friends in the community we would like remind residents about the following information concerning dogs:

Dog Fighting
If you suspect or know of places promoting dog fighting and abused animals, or individuals involved, please report any incidents or information to the Humane Society’s Dog Fighting Hotline at 877-215-2250. There is a reward of up to $5000.00 if you report someone who operates a ring and it leads to a conviction.

Tethering
As of September 4, 2009 it is no longer legal to tether your dog in any manner. Leaving your dog on a chain, rope, or tie out is illegal.

Section 34-205(b) of the Fulton County Code of Ordinances is hereby amended to add the following new subparagraphs:
(5) It shall be unlawful for the owner, custodian, or harborer of any dog to restrain or anchor such animal by means of a tether. Notwithstanding the prior sentence, a dog may be temporarily restrained by means of a tether while the dog is attended by its owner, custodian, or harborer.
(6) Any tether used to temporarily confine a dog while attended by its owner, custodian, or harborer as provided in subsection (5′), above, must be attached to a properly fitted collar or harness and shall not be wrapped directly around the dog’s neck. Such tethers shall not be excessively heavy or weighted so as to inhibit the dog’s movement.

Healthy alternatives to tethering are:

  • Bring your dog inside. This is the ideal situation for your dog to become part of the family. Fulton County Animal Services along with Dogs Deserve Better will be glad to teach you how to walk him, help you house train, and show you how to teach him what is okay and is not okay to chew on. A well trained dog is a loyal friend for life.
  • Spay and neuter. Fulton County Animal Services is glad to fix your pets for free! A neutered male is less likely to try to escape a fence or ‘mark’ in the home. A spayed female dog will not go into heat so she will not roam looking for a mate. Also, spaying reduces unwanted litters of puppies- helping to decrease the number of strays in our communities.
  • Install a fence. A secure fence, at the appropriate height, gives your dog limited freedom and makes house training easier with quick access to the outdoors. Fencing can be cheap and easy to put up. We are glad to provide information on organizations that will help you build or improve fences and dog runs in your yard.

Westview Centennial Celebration

Centennial Celebration Photos

On Saturday, June 26th, the Westview neighborhood celebrated its 100th birthday. The Westview Centennial Celebration took place at KIPP STRIVE Academy, the new charter middle school next to the BeltLine.

The day’s activities started with a 5K sponsored by the BeltLine, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the Westview portion of the BeltLine Model Mile.

The celebrations continued with music by RnB band In The Pocket, house music by DJs Ryze, Drew, and Ramon Rawsoul, puppet shows and storytelling for young and old, vendors selling organic soaps, prints and more, and some friendly rivalry between the grill-off contestants over who would win the public’s heart for their chicken and rib recipes.

Additionally, the Westview Community Organization would like to thank the following people for making the Westview Centennial Celebration happen:

What:
The Westview neighborhood is excited to be celebrating its centennial!

100 years ago William J. Davis purchased the Westwood Park property from the Ontario Land Company for $100,000. He renamed the property “West End Park”, and hired Solon Zachery Ruff, the civil engineer and landscape expert responsible for Ansley Park, to lay out the plans for his new residence park neighborhood. The lots were auctioned off, and neighbors built beautiful Craftsman bungalows along the wide streets.

Today Westview is a vibrant (and still affordable) in-town neighborhood only five minutes from downtown and seven minutes from Midtown! Come spend a day with us and get to know one of Atlanta’s last hidden gems.

The Atlanta BeltLine is sponsoring a free 5K run/walk in conjunction with the grand opening of phase two of the Westview/West End Trail. Immediately following the 5k will be a neighborhood celebration, featuring a grill-off, music, games, and an artist market!

Things to Bring:
Picnic blankets, camping chairs, an appetite, $5 for the grill-off, sunscreen, cold water, smiles.

Westview Master Planning Workshop

Master Planning Workshop

The Westview Community Organization’s Development Committee has been working on a big project for about a year – a master plan for the neighborhood. Neighborhood plans are developed to determine the physical, social, and economic growth and development needs of a neighborhood and help the city allocate money for improvements. As many parts of the city already have plans, Westview neighbors determined it was time to follow suit. The plan the Westview Community Organization puts together will ultimately be brought in front of City Council with the goal of getting adopted into Atlanta’s Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP).

One step required to have the plan officially recognized by the City of Atlanta is to have a public master planning session. Approximately 1,400 postcards were sent out to property owners in the weeks leading up to the May 15, 2010 master planning session to inform them of the upcoming event. A lot of planning was required leading up to the public event. Members of the Development Committee surveyed every street of the neighborhood, noting the conditions of streets, sidewalks, houses, and locations of street signs, telephone poles, trees, and other important aspects required to establish a thorough plan of the neighborhood. This would create the foundation required for the public input.

On the morning of May 15th residents were encouraged to participate in a walk through the neighborhood to re-familiarize themselves with the different areas of the community. At noon the official meeting started with a presentation about the neighborhood. Residents then split into three different planning groups – commercial, BeltLine and greenspaces, and walkability and connectivity.

Following the master planning session the Development Committee will compile the collected information and input to further develop the plan for Westview’s future.

Community Garden

Property owner Mr. Mitchell has graciously provided an empty plot of land near the intersection of South Gordon Street and Ralph David Abernathy Blvd to the Westview Community Organization for use as a community garden. A group of neighbors tilled the land and set up plots in preparation for their garden. People interested in participating in the WCO community garden should email
