After a cold and long winter the night time temperatures have finally become mild enough to plant the seedlings in the community garden. And so young and old joined together to mow, till ground beds, and to start planting the first tomatoes, okra, bush beans, and peppers in the raised beds. The work is not done, but we’re excited to finally have the first set of plants in the ground!

The Big Apple Inn is at it again – they’re back in the news! We couldn’t be more proud of one of our favorite local Westview restaurants being featured in Creative Loafing’s “2014 Atlanta cheap eats superlatives” article. Congratulations April, keep it up!
Chad purchased his home in Westview in 2009. Since moving to the neighborhood he has been an active volunteer engaged in numerous projects including (but not limited to) working on the neighborhood’s National Register application, coordinating with Trees Atlanta to plant over 300 trees in the neighborhood, repairing and installing signage throughout the neighborhood and helping out with community clean-ups.
Chad’s home is a 1925 Craftsman Bungalow with Tudor Revival detailing. He works as an architectural historian with the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the historic housing stock of Westview is what drew him to the neighborhood. Before living in Westview Chad owned a home in East Atlanta, and he finds similarities between the two neighborhoods – great historic houses, proximity to a neighborhood commercial village, and the same geographic orientation to the city.

Atlanta Streets Alive came to southwest Atlanta on Sunday, April 20, 2014, and the Westview Community Organization set up a space for hula hooping, gymnastics, and hot dogs to entertain passerby’s.
Atlanta Streets Alive temporarily closed the streets to automobile traffic with the goal to enable residents to use them for bicycling, walking, dancing, playing and fun ways to explore the community streets in a safer, healthier, more livable way. Over 16,000 people came out to participate in taking over the streets for a few hours!

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), in cooperation with the City of Atlanta, Invest Atlanta, and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI), is conducting an environmental review process for extensions of the Atlanta Streetcar. The purpose of this environmental review process is to refine conceptual project alignments, evaluate ridership potential, capital costs, land use, economic development, and environmental effects. Please join them for the upcoming public meeting to discuss how this process will unfold and the next steps.
Thanks to all those who paid their Westview Community Organization dues during the March Membership Drive. The most dues were collected in the section of the neighborhood that includes South Gordon, Westwood, Rogers, Willard, Manson and Akridge – congratulations, you have won a block party! (Although everyone is welcome to attend.) Please stay tuned for details about the block party.
None the less, it is never too late to join and support the Westview Community Organization! It’s easy to pay dues online with PayPal. Annual dues are only $20 and support ongoing projects, including:
- Westview Summer Solstice Celebration – Summer festival with a grill-off, music, artist market, and fun games for the kids.
- Third Thursday Pizza Night – Mingle with neighbors, new and old, every third Thursday of the month while munching on pizza at Westview Pizza Café.
- National Night Out – “America’s Night Out Against Crime”
- South Gordon Community Garden – Join neighbors on Saturdays from 10am-2pm to tend to vegetables and fruit.
- Landscaping & Beautification – Maintaining the landscaped traffic islands throughout the neighborhood and other beautification projects.
- Stokes Avenue Pocket Park – Upkeep and socializing at the community pocket park.
- Historical Research – Ongoing historical research about the Westview neighborhood.
- Youth Programs – Sponsor of Southwest Atlanta Youth Empowerment Camp and other youth activities.
- Newsletter – Printing and delivery to keep neighbors informed.
