Phoenix Flies: Westview Cemetery Candler Era Tour

This tour, which covers the 20th century expansion of the cemetery by Asa Candler Jr., begins at Crab Orchard Fountain. Tour goers will learn about the lives of many important Atlantans and will experience the beauty of the Westview Abbey built in 1943-45. The Abbey’s Florence Candler Chapel includes carved reredos, painted panels and marvelous stained glass.

Tour goers will learn about the lives of many important Atlantans like Joel Chandler Harris, Lemuel Pratt Grant, Henry Grady, Asa Candler and Harriett Harwell Wilson High while enjoying beautiful sculptures and historic structures.

Phoenix Flies: Westview Abby Architectural Lecture

Nestled in the heart of Westview Cemetary lies an Atlanta architectural gem known as the Westview Abbey. This traditionally ornamented Spanish Baroque structure contains numberous artworks, stained glass windows, and a beautifully appointed chapel. Native Atlantan Architect Jonathan Willis LaCrosse will discuss the architectural and historical significance of this local treasure.

Believed to have been built in 1870 and once residence of Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, prominent Atlanta physician and arts patron, this Eastlake Victorian now houses a collection of mid-nineteenth century art by African American artists, hosts exhibits and serves as a resource center and base for educational programs that reach out to the community.

Phoenix Flies: Wren’s Nest House Tours

The Wren’s Nest is the former home of Joel Chandler Harris author of the famous Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit tales. Harris lived in this Queen Anne Victorian home from 1881 to 1908 and penned many of the timeless stories on the front porch. Touring the Wren’s Nest will allow you to step back in time and enjoy a house tour.

This site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
